Bio
Coach Alec Matlock began working with Missouri State-West Plains Softball program in September 2024. Matlock brings with him a wealth of experience and a proven track record of success in coaching and player development.
Most recently, while obtaining his masters degree, Matlock served as an assistant coach for Southern Utah University’s (SUU) softball program. His contributions helped guide the team to its best start in a decade and its highest winning percentage since 2014. SUU finished 2nd in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) for home runs, working with Beccera who holds a record for home runs at SUU, and the privilege to coach Gonzalez, who earned First Team All-WAC honors.
Matlock’s coaching prowess extended to softball in his role as an assistant coach for the Clarksville Lady Panthers Softball team. Under his guidance, the team achieved 2nd place finishes in both the conference and district tournaments in 2022 and followed up with a 2nd place conference and 3rd place district finish in 2023. His efforts propelled the team to regional playoff appearances both years.
Matlock's love for coaching started with Sluggers Baseball Club. From 2018 to 2020, as an assistant coach for Sluggers Baseball Club, Matlock guided three teams to state championships and led several others to appearances in the Perfect Game World Series, securing two championship titles. His leadership and ability to develop winning strategies were further showcased in 2021 when he helped lead the Beebe American Legion teams to a state tournament appearance.
Matlock holds a bachelor's degree in health and physical education from Arkansas Tech University and is currently completing his master's degree in Sports Management. His commitment to player development and his passion for the game make him an invaluable addition to the Grizzlies softball program, aligning perfectly with MSU-WP's commitment to progress.
